Manganese is the world's fourth-most consumed metal by weight behind Iron, aluminium and copper and 90% of all manganese consumed annually goes into steel as an alloying agent. It is a brittle, hard gray-white metal that looks much like iron. The two main manganese minerals are pyrolusite (MnO2) and rhodochrosite (MnCO3).

Australia has 12% of the worlds EDR of manganese ore and is ranked fourth behind Ukraine (31%), South Africa (17%) and China (15%). Australia produces 15% of the world's Mmanganese ore and is ranked third behind China (23%) and South Africa (21%). There are manganese ore in Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Ghana, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Gabon too.

Metallurgical:
In addition to its use as an alloy in steel and cast iron, manganese is also employed as an alloy (in very much lesser amounts) with aluminum, copper, nickel, titanium and zinc. It's also used in miniscule amounts for electronic applications, with, amongst other metals, bismuth, gold and silver.

Nonmetallurgical:
After steel, the battery sector is currently the second-largest consumer of manganese today. In addition, manganese is also used in: Animal feed and fertilizers, Colorants for various cosmetics, plastics and artists' glazes, Pigments for bricks, frits, glass, paints tiles and textiles, Water treatment chemicals.
